Poker Hand Rankings

It helps to know what beats what in the game of poker. In all the games offered on TowerGaming, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha, 7 card stud and 5 card draw, the best five card poker hand wins the pot. Here are the hand rankings in poker from lowest to highest:

King of Diamonds CardJack of Clubs CardTen of Spades CardSix of Diamonds CardThree of Hearts Card   High Card: The lowest hand in poker is nothing, also known as your high card. When you have nothing, your only hope of winning the pot is that your opponent also has nothing, and that you have the high card.
 
Ace of Diamonds CardAce of Spades CardAce of Clubs CardSix of Diamonds CardTwo of Hearts Card   Pair: Two of the same rank of card. If two or more players have a pair, the player with the highest pair wins. If two or more players have the same pair, the next highest card in each players hand (called the ‘kicker’) determines who wins.  
 
Tern of Hearts CardTen of Spades CardSix of Clubs CardSix of Spades CardKing of Hearts Card   Two Pair: Two pair beats one pair. This hand is made up of one pair of one rank and a second pair of another rank. If two or more players have two pair, the player with the higher of the two high pair wins. For example, jacks and eights beats tens and nines. If two players have the exact same two pair, the ‘kicker’ will determine who wins.
 
Jack of Spades CardJack of Diamonds CardJack of Hearts CardFive of Spades CardFive of Diamonds Card   Three of a Kind: Three of a kind beats two pair. This hand is exactly what it sounds like – three cards of the same rank, also referred to as trips, or a set.

Straight: Straight beats three of a kind. Five consecutive cards, such as 56789 is an example of a straight. If two or more players have a straight, the hand with the higher cards win.

Flush: Flush beats a straight. Five cards of the same suit makes a flush. When there is two or more players with a flush, the player with the highest card that is not common to both hands wins the pot.

Full House: Full House beats a flush. A hand made of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. If two players have full houses, the higher three of a kind wins. For example, JJJKK beats TTTAA.

Four of a Kind: Like three of a kind, this hand is exactly what it sounds like – four cards of the same rank. This poker hand is also known as Quads.

Straight Flush: The second highest hand in the game of poker – five consecutive cards of the same suit.

Royal Flush: The Grand Daddy of all poker hands – the highest possible poker hand you can be dealt. This is a straight from 10 to Ace in the same suit. Also known as Royal Straight Flush or Royal.

Of course, all of these hands have alternate or slang names for them. There are the traditional name, like Royalty for the Royal Flush; and there are other names that certain players have given to the different hands.
