Poker Dictionary: Poker Words Beginning With H

Hammer

To bet and raise aggressively.

“Jeff is being a Hammer tonight, so watch out.”

Hand

A player's five best cards.

“My Hand was just slightly better than my opponent's.”

Heads up

A pot that is being contested by only two players.

Heads up poker is where skill really starts to shine through.

Hearts

One of the four card suits.

“I had a hand full of Hearts .”

High Card

(1.) A hand with no pair that is ranked according to its highest ranked card.

(2.) To win over your opponent by virtue of high-ranking cards, specifically kickers.

A skilled player rarely bets on just a High Card .

Hi/lo

A split pot game.

“We were playing Omaha Hi/Lo.”

Hole

Face-down cards.

“My Hole cards were strong enough to make me call the $100 raise.”

Hit

The flop has cards that help your hand. As in “the flop hit you”.

“I Hit the ten on the river, which completed my straight.”

Hit and Run

To play the game for a short time and cash out.

“I hadn't planned on a Hit and Run, but that's the way it worked out.”

Hooks

Slang for a Jack, as a ‘J' resembles a hook.

“My Hooks beat your tens.”

Hot

A player who is dealt many good hands, and is winning most of the hands he or she plays.

“Molly is Hot tonight.”

Hot Seat

A seat at a poker table where the player has winning hands.

“There was no evident Hot Seat at the table that night.”

House

A casino or place where a poker game is hosted.

“The House always wins.”

House Rules

Rules that are specific to the particular casino or place that the poker game is being hosted by.

“Always be aware of the House Rules .”
