Bingo Aids Banned in CA

Chairity Bingo Halls Request Help From Courts

California charities have requested assistance from courts to help stop the state from taking their bingo machines away Monday, June 2nd.

The state said the booklets of paper bingo cards used with electronic bingo aids don't meet the legal requirement for the use of "cards" in bingo games and last month the attorney general gave several area bingo operations until June 6th to end their electronic bingo services. If they fail to comply, legal action has been threatened.

It is calculated that the California Charity Bingo Association said Sacramento County area charities will lose around $10 million a year if they stop using the electronic bingo aides. Charities use the money from electronic bingo aids to fund services for children, the disabled and non-profit community services.

Ravi Mehta, executive director of the California Charity Bingo Association (CCBA) says, “This action will devastate the ability of many charities to provide essential services to tens of thousands of Californians in need. “ The CCBA represents many of the charities that would be affected.

Attorneys for CCBA said the state's ban is unconstitutional seizure of private property and discrimination against persons with disabilities.
